High-Altitude Light: Zhang Chaoyin’s solo show in Florence

Manifattura Tabacchi in Florence presents High-Altitude Light. A Forty-Year Love Letter on Film, a solo exhibition by photographer Zhang Chaoyin, a leading voice in contemporary landscape photography in Asia. Curated by Guoyin Jiang and coordinated by Massimo Listri, the show runs from 26 March to 15 May 2026 at Spazio B12.

The exhibition gathers roughly 60 works created over four decades of exploration across the Himalayan region. Shot on analog film and frequently printed in the refined platinum-palladium technique, the images combine documentary precision with poetic depth to convey landscapes, local communities and cultural memories of high-altitude environments.

A complementary section features works by Zhang Yuxiao, offering a generational perspective that enriches the visual dialogue. Another highlight is the Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter series printed on Chinese silk, which evokes natural cycles as a metaphor for continuity and cultural exchange.

During the exhibition a video will present Zhang Chaoyin’s workflow for platinum-palladium printing and retrace forty years of fieldwork in high-altitude territories. The original edition of the encyclopedic volume Himalaya (Chinese National Geography) is also on display, showcasing a geo-humanistic editorial project of extraordinary scope.

Positioned within Manifattura Tabacchi’s revitalised cultural district, the show creates a bridge between Alpine and Himalayan geographies and between European and Asian perspectives, offering visitors a rigorous yet poetic photographic experience.
