Lubriano: a Tuscia village on the Valle dei Calanchi

Lubriano is a small village in the Viterbo area that looks out over the Valle dei Calanchi — a landscape of clay ridges and eroded spires. With under a thousand residents, the village preserves historical layers and a quiet atmosphere ideal for slow visits.

What to see in Lubriano

  • Piazza San Giovanni Battista: the village square, a meeting point with views over the valley and the historic Fontana della Pucciotta, a basalt basin topped by a bronze figure.
  • Church of San Giovanni Battista: a compact church with baroque elements, housing paintings, plaques and local relics.
  • Palazzo Monaldeschi: historic residence named after the Monaldeschi family, remodeled in the 1600s with notable halls and terraced gardens.
  • Monaldeschi Tower: a visual landmark; when open it offers expansive views over the Monti Amerini, the Tiber Valley and nearby settlements.
  • Natural History Museum: focuses on local geology and biodiversity, explaining how the calanchi formed and organizing guided walks on nearby trails.
  • Santuario della Madonna del Poggio: a sanctuary dating back to the 1500s, later enlarged in baroque style and important for local religious celebrations.

Things to do

  • Visit the viewpoints: several panoramic points along the ridge allow you to discover different compositions of the calanchi with small walks between them.
  • Climb the Monaldeschi Tower: if accessible, the ascent provides a clear understanding of the territorial layout.
  • Join local festivals: summer events include wine festivals and food fairs that highlight local produce and conviviality.
  • See the Ascension Flower Carpets: a community event where streets are decorated with handcrafted floral designs.
  • Take guided museum excursions: field trips from the museum help interpret the geology and local traditions.
  • Taste regional products: small shops and wine bars offer Teverina wines, cured meats and Chianina beef.

How to get there

Lubriano lies in the province of Viterbo, a short drive from Bagnoregio and roughly 120 km from Rome. The village is mainly reached by car: most of the route is along well-maintained roads, while the final kilometers require attention because of reduced signage and narrow stretches. At the entrance to Lubriano there is a well-known panoramic spot at about 470 metres above sea level from which a gentle descent leads to the historic centre. A post-war bridge connects the area to the Umbrian road network and simplifies access to the nearest motorway junction.

Practical tips: check event calendars if visiting in summer, wear sturdy shoes for uneven paths, and allow time to stop at panoramic points for the best views of the calanchi.
