The Loggia di Banchi in Genoa is the focus of a new planning direction that aims to return a lively, accessible space to the city while safeguarding archaeological remains discovered during the 2021 excavations. Local authorities, in dialogue with the Superintendency and other stakeholders, are defining measures that reconcile conservation with public use.
Rather than becoming a solely static museum, the plan foresees a multifunctional concept. Key elements include:
To reconcile conservation needs with the desire to keep the Loggia traversable, technical solutions such as glass pavements or transparent panels are planned to allow viewing of the remains without direct exposure. This approach preserves the archaeology while maintaining the area’s public function.
The project phase remains open to consultation: the municipality intends to launch a participation process with citizens, cultural institutions and interested private actors before formally awarding contracts. The goal is a collective decision that restores the Loggia as a meeting point between the port area and the historic centre.
The 2021 discovery required rethinking the design. Cataloguing and protecting the finds are priorities, but the plan avoids permanently fencing off the area: the aim is to preserve the Loggia’s identity as a covered square and a public exchange space.
What visitors can expect: the Loggia should remain accessible and usable, enriched by routes showcasing the finds and cultural activities aimed at residents and visitors.
