Locri Epizephiri: excavations resume at the Marasà Temple with a public training site

Autore: Redazione 13/03/2026 02:19

New excavation campaign at Locri Epizephiri

Archaeological work is restarting in the sacred area of Locri Epizephiri with a project funded by the Ministry of Culture and promoted by the Direzione Regionale Musei Calabria in partnership with the University of Bologna. Preliminary activities are scheduled to begin on 2 September 2024.

Project objectives

  • Marasà Temple: a new stratigraphic investigation in a previously unexplored area to reveal artifacts and clarify construction phases and later modifications.
  • Themosmophorion: restoration and definition of the original boundaries of the sacred area to better understand the sanctuary’s layout and its relationship with surrounding complexes.
  • Scientific coordination by Professor Filippo Demma, supported by the Department of History, Cultures and Civilizations and the School of Specialization in Archaeology at the University of Bologna, directed by Professor Elisabetta Govi.
  • Organization and site enhancement led by the Regional Museums Directorate of Calabria and the Archaeological Park and Museum under Director Elena Trunfio.

Didactic excavation and public engagement

An important innovation is the didactic excavation managed by University of Bologna students: an on-site laboratory designed to provide practical training for young archaeologists and to bring the public closer to excavation work.

  • Scheduled guided tours to monitor excavation progress.
  • Periodic lectures and meetings with the research team to explain findings and methods.
  • Updates and outreach materials published via the museum’s and mission’s official channels.

Significance

The campaign aims to expand knowledge of sacred archaeology in Magna Graecia, improve site conservation and accessibility, and train new professionals in public archaeology. The initiative combines scientific research, education and cultural promotion.

Practical information

To join guided visits, public events or receive updates on the didactic site, check the official website and social channels of the Archaeological Park and Museum of Locri or contact the Direzione Regionale Musei Calabria for the official schedule of activities.
