Sferisterio of Macerata – the monumental neoclassical theater of the Marche

Autore: Redazione 01/10/2025 08:21

History and description

Considered one of the most fascinating buildings in the Marche region, the Sferisterio of Macerata was designed in 1823 by Ireneo Alessandri with the aim of giving the city a venue for public entertainment, although it was originally intended for the traditional ball game pallone col bracciale. The structure consists of a semicircular arena with a wall about 18 meters high and 90 meters long, and it can accommodate around 3,000 spectators. Unique in the Italian architectural landscape for its neoclassical style, the theater initially hosted sporting events, including matches played by Carlo Didimi—celebrated in a work by Giacomo Leopardi—before being transformed, starting in 1921, into a temple of opera. This change was inaugurated with a performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida, and since then the venue has become the home of the Macerata Opera Festival.

Curiosities

The Sferisterio is also renowned for its exceptional acoustics. It is said that from the center of the stage one can speak in a low voice and still be heard clearly in the very last row, without the use of microphones.

Access

The theater can be visited during events and performances, and it is also open for guided tours at the cost of €6, with free admission and specific reductions available.

How to reach it

Located in the historic center of Macerata, the theater can be reached by car via the A14 motorway and the SS77 highway to the city center, by train from Ancona or Fabriano stations followed by a bus ride, or on foot once in the city.

Considered one of the most fascinating and evocative theaters for its neoclassical architecture, the Sferisterio of Macerata is an ideal place to experience a blend of music, sport, and history.
