Liguria in spring: villages to discover

Spring is the perfect season to visit Liguria's villages: mild weather, fewer crowds and clearer coastal colors. Below is a curated list of historic towns that reveal the region's character—great for a weekend trip or day outings.

Villages to visit

  • Vernazza: one of the five towns of the Cinque Terre, Vernazza keeps the charm of a fishing village with its small harbor and colorful houses. Spring makes the coastal trails more enjoyable. Historical highlights include the Church of Santa Margherita of Antioch and the Doria Castle. Recommended access: train on the Genoa–La Spezia line, by foot along the coastal paths, or by sea; car access is restricted.
  • Corniglia: the only Cinque Terre village that overlooks the sea from above, Corniglia offers spectacular views from the Santa Maria terrace. Less exposed to mass tourism, it is surrounded by terraced vineyards and ancient mule tracks—perfect for a quieter experience.
  • Cervo: in western Liguria, Cervo is a small Baroque gem facing the Mediterranean. Must-sees include the Church of San Giovanni Battista (the "Corallini"), the Clavesana Castle and the local Ethnographic Museum. Strolling the narrow lanes reveals medieval walls and coastal panoramas.
  • Apricale: perched inland in the Imperia area at about 273 m above sea level, Apricale preserves a medieval urban layout and is famous as an artists' village. Murals and art installations decorate its facades, offering a cultural experience away from the shoreline.
  • Tellaro: on the eastern Riviera, Tellaro is a small fishing village where the sea slips between the houses. The Church of San Giorgio and the Piazzetta della Marina are focal points; in spring the village shows an intimate atmosphere, ideal for relaxed strolls.

Practical tips

When to go: spring (April–May) provides pleasant temperatures and far fewer visitors than the summer months.

Getting around: use trains for the coastal Cinque Terre towns and walk the scenic trails; many centers limit car access to protect landscapes.

What to bring: comfortable shoes for alleys and trails, water, and a light jacket for evenings by the sea. Follow marked paths and local rules to help preserve fragile environments.

Recommended experiences: taste local seafood and wines (such as Sciacchetrà), hike sections of the coastal trails and pause on panoramic terraces to enjoy spring light.
