History and description
Built in the early 1100s, probably by two rival noble families from whom they take their names, the two towers are among the most iconic landmarks of Bologna. The first, the Asinelli Tower, stands 97.2 meters tall and is classified as the most leaning tower in Italy. It also served as a watchtower and even a prison, but today it is best known for the panoramic view it offers. The second, the Garisenda Tower, now 48 meters high due to a lowering process caused by its dangerous tilt, is currently undergoing consolidation works.
Curiosities
Mostly used for strategic purposes, the two towers are surrounded by numerous legends and references. The Garisenda Tower, for example, gained importance from Dante’s mention in Canto XXXI of the Inferno, while the Asinelli Tower is tied to a student legend claiming that university students who climb it will never graduate.
Access
The only tower open to visitors, while the other is under restoration, is the Asinelli Tower. Entry, with mandatory reservation, cost €5 with specific reductions available.
How to reach them
Both towers are located in Bologna’s historic center, in Piazza di Porta Ravegnana, and can be reached on foot from the main squares or by city bus lines.
An iconic symbol of Bologna, the two towers are an integral part of the city’s cultural history and fully belong to its historical landscape, making them an essential stop on any journey to discover the city.
