From today until Sunday the Natural History Museum in Grosseto presents an exhibition dedicated to suiseki, the ancient Eastern practice of observing and valuing naturally shaped stones that evoke miniature landscapes or symbolic forms.
The exhibition is curated by Carlo Maria Galli, one of Italy's leading experts in the field, and organised in collaboration with the Cultural Department of the Municipality of Grosseto. Many of the exhibited specimens originate from the Maremma area and reflect the curator's geological and naturalistic expertise.
Suiseki offers a unique perspective on the relationship between nature and artistic perception: ordinary stones are interpreted as small-scale landscapes or symbolic signs, inviting contemplative observation. The exhibition is suitable for enthusiasts of Eastern arts and for visitors interested in territorial natural heritage.
The exhibition traces the historical origins of suiseki—dating back some two thousand years to China—and highlights the curator's long-standing research and collecting activity in Tuscany. Visitors will find both historical and naturalistic insights.
