Archaeology at Statale: Calvatone and Sesto Calende

A public lecture presenting recent archaeological investigations by the University of Milan at Calvatone and Sesto Calende. Through finds and stratigraphy, the talk retraces the history of rural settlements and their role in northern Italy from the Roman to the medieval period.

Program and topics

The presentation focuses on two main case studies:

  • Calvatone: study of a Roman vicus, highlighting agricultural and commercial activities identified during excavations;
  • Sesto Calende (Oratorio di San Vincenzo): identification of a Roman villa with multiple phases of renovation, illustrating functional and landscape changes over time.

Speakers will show how archaeological evidence reveals patterns of settlement, exchange networks and local administration across an extended chronological span.
