The long-standing festival devoted to the raperonzolo — a wild chicory that grows in damp woods and uncultivated land — drew a large crowd to the village of San Giovanni in Galilea despite chilly, misty weather. The event, promoted by the local Pro Loco with municipal support, celebrates a culinary tradition passed down through generations.
The star of the festival is the raperonzolo, served simply and deliciously: raw with oil, vinegar and salt, or as an accompaniment in local taverns. The day offers a chance to sample regional recipes and learn how this wild plant is collected and prepared.
The central marquee and village taverns provided seating, but capacity can be limited; previously queues have formed up to early afternoon. Arrive early if you plan to have lunch on site.
Organisers: Pro Loco of Borghi, Renzi Museum and Library, Municipality of Borghi.
San Giovanni in Galilea, once an autonomous municipality, preserves a strong sense of community memory: older residents recall families walking from neighboring villages carrying baskets and provisions for a day of celebration. Though the historic centre is smaller today, events like this festival help keep local identity and traditions alive.
