On 15 April 2026, in the Sala Leone of Palazzo Arnone in Cosenza, the Carabinieri for the Protection of Cultural Heritage formally handed over 46 archaeological artifacts to the Director of the Archaeological Parks of Crotone and Sibari. The items were recovered in Italy and France during the investigation named "ACHEI", coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Crotone.
The operation uncovered an international network of illicit excavations and trafficking, identifying 23 individuals and resulting in multiple seizures. The restitution marks a significant step in safeguarding the historical and cultural memory of the affected territories.
For information on potential exhibitions, cataloguing projects, or visits related to the returned materials, consult the official channels of the Directorate of the Archaeological Parks of Crotone and Sibari or local cultural offices.
Why this matters: recovering looted artifacts not only disrupts illegal market routes but also returns valuable historical evidence to local communities, supporting research and the enhancement of the archaeological sites concerned.
