History and description
An important historical work, the Medieval Aqueduct of the Fontana Maggiore was built between 1254 and 1280, thanks to the contribution of Fra Bevignate. It was constructed on the ruins of Roman aqueducts with the purpose of bringing water to the center of Perugia and, in particular, to the Fontana Maggiore, following two different routes over time. Today, the aqueduct—now decommissioned and about 4 kilometers long—still preserves, internally, the tunnel of the main vein of the Merignana (1255), the Fontanella della Barigiana covered with a nymphaeum, the old Conservone, and the Postierla della Conca dating back to the 3rd–2nd century BC. Externally, one can admire the arches known as those of “Monte Spinello,” a pillar, and several bases.
Curiosities
The route along the aqueduct, known as the “Acquedotto Path”, is often used for cultural excursions, as it connects Piazza IV Novembre with the ruins of Monte Pacciano.
Access
As an open‑air monument, the aqueduct is freely accessible at all times. On certain occasions, guided tours are also organized to explore its less visible areas.
How to reach it
Located near the Fontana Maggiore, which it once supplied, the aqueduct is easily reachable on foot from the city center.
Although it is often overshadowed by the fountain itself, the Aqueduct is an unmissable stop for history enthusiasts.
