The Genoa Aquarium: an extraordinary dive into the seas of the world

Autore: Redazione 27/08/2025 14:07

In the heart of Genoa’s Old Port, once an industrial hub and today a vibrant cultural and tourist center, stands the Genoa Aquarium. More than just an attraction, it is a true symbol of the city, which, with its proud maritime heritage, now looks responsibly toward the future of the oceans. Inaugurated in 1992 for the Columbus Celebrations, the aquarium is the largest in Europe in terms of species diversity and offers an immersive, educational, and sensory experience on every level. It is a city within the city — an oasis of biodiversity that fascinates millions of visitors each year.

A Journey Through the Planet’s Ecosystems

The visit unfolds as an adventure through 70 exhibition tanks, home to around 12,000 animals representing over 600 different species. Each area has been carefully designed to recreate authentic natural habitats, offering a vivid glimpse of the world’s oceans and freshwater environments.

  • The Cetacean Pavilion: This futuristic space, featuring large viewing windows and an open-air tank, allows visitors to admire the grace of dolphins as they swim, play, and interact. It’s a breathtaking experience that also deepens understanding of their intelligence and behavior.
  • The Shark Bay: One of the aquarium’s most thrilling areas, this massive tank lets visitors walk beneath swimming sharks of various species — an awe-inspiring experience that gives the sense of being part of their underwater world.
  • The Penguin Island: In this faithfully recreated habitat, visitors can observe the social behavior of penguins up close. Their amusing waddle on land and elegant swimming in water make this one of the aquarium’s most beloved exhibits.
  • The Manatees and Tropical Forest: The Genoa Aquarium is among the few in Europe to host manatees, gentle marine mammals that dwell in a lush tropical environment. This area also recreates a true rainforest ecosystem, inhabited by giant turtles, iguanas, and exotic birds living in perfect harmony.
  • The Biodiversity Pavilion: A fascinating journey through marine life diversity — from the colorful vibrancy of coral reefs to the mysterious beauty of the deep-sea ecosystems. Visitors can marvel at tropical fish, graceful jellyfish, and some of the ocean’s most peculiar and captivating creatures.

More Than Entertainment: A Commitment to Conservation

The Genoa Aquarium is not just a place for discovery and wonder — it is also a center for scientific research and a leader in marine conservation. Through breeding programs and educational initiatives, it plays an active role in protecting endangered species and promoting environmental sustainability. Every visit thus becomes not only enjoyable but also deeply educational and inspiring, encouraging awareness of the importance of preserving marine ecosystems for the planet’s future.
