Visiting the Colosseum remains one of Rome’s top attractions, but many travelers now report difficulties booking through the official site. Key causes include platform errors, occasional cyber incidents and daily demand that often reaches or exceeds capacity.
To curb unauthorized resale, the Colosseum Archaeological Park introduced tighter name-change rules: starting 9 May 2026 name changes will be allowed only within 7 days of the visit and only for documented reasons (typos, force majeure, incorrect ticket assignment). The measure aims to reduce speculative transfers.
When official tickets are scarce, resale platforms often list entries at higher prices than the base fare (e.g., €18), frequently bundled with tours or extras. This reduces visitor choice and can significantly increase costs.
Proposals from the sector include extending summer opening hours and allowing earlier ticket releases beyond the current 30-day window. Such changes could ease pressure on the official platform and improve public access to the archaeological site.
Bottom line: ticket shortages stem from a mix of high demand, resale practices and technical limits. Advance planning and using official channels remain the safest ways to secure a Colosseum visit.
