The Carrara Academy: a journey through centuries of art in Bergamo

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 14:19

In the vibrant heart of Bergamo stands a jewel of history and art: the Carrara Academy. It is not only an art gallery but a true treasure chest that preserves centuries of human creativity, offering visitors an unforgettable journey through the eras and styles that have shaped Western art. The history of the Carrara Academy dates back to the 18th century, specifically to 1796. It was founded by the visionary Count Giacomo Carrara, an enlightened nobleman from Bergamo and a passionate art lover. Count Carrara did not limit himself to collecting artworks — he envisioned an institution that would not only exhibit his vast artistic heritage but also serve as a school for training young artists. This dual purpose — preservation and education — has defined the Academy since its origins, making it a vital center for the study and dissemination of art.

The treasures of the Carrara Academy

The halls of the Carrara Academy house a priceless collection spanning five centuries of art history, from the 15th to the 19th century. Each room represents a stage in this fascinating journey, where visitors can admire masterpieces by some of the greatest Italian and European masters. Among the most remarkable works are those by Pisanello, whose meticulous detail anticipates the Renaissance, and Jacopo Bellini, father of one of Venice’s most important artistic dynasties, whose works mark the transition from the Gothic to the Renaissance. The collection continues with the art of Andrea Mantegna, whose perspective precision and expressive strength make him one of the giants of the Paduan Renaissance, and Giovanni Bellini, considered one of the fathers of Venetian painting for his delicacy and innovative use of color. The vivid storytelling of Vittore Carpaccio transports the viewer to the Venice of his time, while the graceful figures and poetic vision of Sandro Botticelli make him one of the emblematic artists of the Florentine Renaissance. The collection also includes works by Perugino, Raphael’s teacher, known for his serene and harmonious compositions, and though fewer in number, paintings by Raphael himself, a cornerstone of the collection. The psychologically rich and spiritually intense paintings of Lorenzo Lotto reveal a deeply original artist, while Giovanni Battista Moroni, an excellent portraitist, captures the soul of his subjects with striking precision and depth. The Venetian Baroque virtuoso Giovanni Battista Tiepolo is represented with works full of light, color, and movement, and Canaletto’s luminous and detailed views of Venice offer unforgettable glimpses of 18th-century lagoon life. Finally, the museum displays works by Francesco Hayez, a leading figure of Italian Romanticism, whose paintings evoke deep emotion and patriotic ideals, and by Giacomo Ceruti, known as “Il Pitocchetto,” whose genre scenes portray with realism and humanity the lives of the less fortunate. The collection also includes sculptures, drawings, prints, and medals, further enriching the visitor’s experience and offering a complete view of the figurative arts across different centuries.

Five centuries of art, history, and culture

Visiting the Carrara Academy is a true journey through time, encompassing five centuries of artistic evolution. The path begins with the refinement of the International Gothic and the early light of the Renaissance, continues through the magnificence of the 16th century, explores the drama and emotion of the Baroque, admires the elegance of the 18th century, and concludes with the emotional depth of Romanticism. Each hall tells a story; each artwork reveals a piece of the European artistic puzzle, allowing visitors to understand the stylistic transformations, technical innovations, and cultural sensibilities that have followed one another over time.
