In the heart of Venosa, the birthplace of the poet Horace, stands the majestic Castle of Pirro del Balzo. Within its Renaissance walls lies one of the most important cultural institutions in Basilicata: the National Archaeological Museum “Mario Torelli.” Dedicated to the renowned archaeologist, the museum offers a fascinating journey through the millennia of the region’s history — from the earliest traces of human presence to the splendor of the Roman age.
The exhibition is designed as a coherent and engaging narrative, guiding visitors step by step through the ancient past of Venosa and its surrounding territory. The collection, the result of decades of archaeological excavations, spans a vast chronological range, beginning with the most ancient testimonies of life. One of the most extraordinary sections is devoted to artifacts dating back as far as 600,000 years, including the celebrated fragment of a femur belonging to Homo erectus — one of the most important prehistoric discoveries in Europe. The following rooms illustrate the culture of the Italic peoples, showcasing everyday objects, ritual items, and funerary artifacts that offer insight into their customs and way of life.
Particular attention is devoted to the Roman period, when Venosa (Venusia) flourished as a prosperous colony. Among the highlights on display are sculptures, mosaics, domestic objects, and funerary inscriptions, all of which vividly narrate the social and economic life of the city. The museum itinerary culminates with a section dedicated to Horace, providing an opportunity to explore the poet’s enduring connection to his homeland.
The experience is further enhanced by the museum’s evocative setting. The Castle of Pirro del Balzo, with its imposing towers and grand courtyard, offers the perfect atmosphere for an immersive journey through history. Its strategic location — just steps away from the Archaeological Park and the Church of the Holy Trinity — makes it the ideal starting point for a comprehensive exploration of Venosa’s cultural and historical heritage. Here, history is not just observed but felt, as visitors trace the very roots of civilization.
