History and description
Considered one of the most important historic buildings in Ancona, the Loggia dei Mercanti, built starting in 1442, is externally characterized by a Gothic‑Renaissance façade with arches and mullioned windows. It was designed by Giorgio Sebenico, one of the leading figures of the Adriatic Renaissance. The façade is divided into three sections, with pinnacled columns representing the four cardinal virtues. Built near the port to serve as a meeting place for merchants, the loggia was damaged and later restored after the fire of 1556. Today, it belongs to the Chamber of Commerce of Ancona.
Curiosities
The representation of the Cardinal Virtues—Prudence, Justice, Fortitude, and Temperance—is not accidental; they were chosen as ideal symbols to guide the activities of merchants.
Access
The building is not always open to the public but can be visited during special events and extraordinary openings, with information available on the official website of the Municipality of Ancona.
How to reach it
Located in Ancona’s historic center, the loggia is easily accessible by car (with parking near the port), by train (line R), or by city bus (lines B or N), followed by a short walk.
Considered a rare example of Gothic architecture in the Marche region, the Loggia dei Mercanti is an unmissable stop for its beauty and historical significance.
