The Feast of Saint Agatha is one of the most important events in the religious and cultural identity of Catania and is considered one of the most impressive religious celebrations in the world. It takes place every year from February 3 to 5 and attracts thousands of faithful and visitors from all over the world, combining spirituality, popular tradition, and spectacle.
Saint Agatha, born in Catania around 230 AD into a Christian family, was martyred for refusing to renounce her faith before the proconsul Quinziano. Over time, she has become a symbol of purity, strength, and spiritual liberation for the entire city.
During the festival, the silver fercolo (statue) containing the saint's relics is carried through the streets accompanied by the ‘candleure’, devotees dressed in white with black scarves, and traditional choirs, creating an intense and evocative atmosphere. February 3 begins with the Mass of the Aurora and the procession of votive candles; on February 4, the central moment, the reliquary bust leaves the Cathedral and travels through symbolic streets of the city; February 5 is dedicated to solemn services and the blessing of children.
For the people of Catania, the festival is an authentic act of collective love, enriched by lights, traditional sweets, and traditions, recognized by UNESCO for its high cultural and anthropological value.
