Saint Agatha was born in Catania around 230 AD into a noble Christian family. Her life, marked by an unwavering love for her faith, was brutally cut short by the proconsul Quinziano, who had her martyred after the young woman refused to renounce her beliefs. Since then, the saint has become an icon of purity, strength, and spiritual liberation for the entire city.

Every year, Catania is transformed into an open-air theater, with a whirlwind of sounds, smells, and colors accompanying the silver “fercolo,” which holds the relics of the martyr, through the streets of the city. The white of the “candleure,” the fervor of the devotees dressed in white tunics and black scarves, symbols of penance, and the choirs singing the traditional “Viva Sant'Aita!” create a mystical and evocative atmosphere.
The program opens on February 3 with the evocative Mass of the Aurora and the traditional procession of the “candles,” enormous decorated votive candles paraded in honor of the saint. February 4, the heart of the festival, is the day when the reliquary bust of Saint Agatha leaves the Cathedral of Catania, crossing the city amid applause, tears, and songs.

The route follows places rich in meaning, from Via Etnea to Piazza Stesicoro, passing through the Borgo, until the evocative nighttime return to the Cathedral. February 5, the last day of celebrations, is dedicated to solemn religious services and intense popular participation. A crucial moment is the passage of the fercolo in front of the church of San Placido, where hundreds of children are blessed, a symbolic gesture that renews the bond between the city and its patron saint every year.
For the people of Catania, the Feast of Saint Agatha is not only a religious celebration, it is an act of collective love that unites centuries of history, art, and popular traditions. Balconies are decorated with lights, markets are filled with the aromas of traditional sweets such as ‘minne di Sant'Agata’ (St. Agatha's cakes), and the streets resound with bells and fireworks. The celebration has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an event of extraordinary cultural and anthropological value, combining Christian spirituality with the vital energy of an entire people.
