Jago Museum: Where Renaissance Art Meets the Social Fabric of Modern Naples

Autore: Redazione 30/09/2025 14:40

In the vibrant Rione Sanità district of Naples, contemporary artist Jago (born Jacopo Cardillo) has created an innovative and deeply community-oriented project: the Jago Museum. This space is not just an exhibition gallery but a true cultural hub, merging traditional marble sculpture with a contemporary and socially engaged artistic vision.

The Venue: A Gesture of Urban Renewal

The Jago Museum is housed in a place rich in history and spirituality — the ancient Church of Sant’Aspreno ai Crociferi, just steps away from the Basilica of San Severo fuori le mura. The decision to establish the museum in a historic complex at the heart of the Sanità district is deeply symbolic: it reflects the artist’s desire to actively participate in the revitalization of the neighborhood, transforming a forgotten heritage site into a center of culture and social inclusion.

Jago himself described the museum’s opening as a “return to the light,” a gesture meant to give back to the community a piece of its identity and collective memory.

The Works: Marble and Emotion

Born in 1987, Jago is celebrated for his technical mastery reminiscent of Renaissance sculptors — particularly Michelangelo and the Neapolitan tradition (many see in his work a spiritual kinship with Sanmartino’s Veiled Christ). Yet his subjects are profoundly contemporary and universal, often shared through social media and video documentation that reveal his creative process and foster a direct dialogue with the public.

Among the works displayed in and around the Jago Museum are some of his most iconic creations:

  • Il Figlio Velato (The Veiled Son): inspired by the famous 18th-century masterpiece, this deeply moving sculpture portrays a child draped in a veil — a symbol of human fragility and a heartfelt homage to Neapolitan masters. The piece is permanently displayed in the nearby Chapel of the Whites, inside the Basilica of San Severo fuori le mura.
  • La Venere (Venus): a marble sculpture that challenges classical iconography, inviting reflection on beauty, perception, and the contemporary gaze.
  • Aiace e Cassandra, Pietà, Narciso, and Apparato Circolatorio: works that reveal Jago’s unique ability to draw from marble not only perfect form but also profound emotion and contemplation of the human condition.

A Community Project

The Jago Museum stands out for its mission to serve as a meeting place and catalyst of creative energy for the local community. Its purpose is to develop innovative projects of education and inclusion, using art as a tool to enhance the historical and cultural heritage of the Rione Sanità.

Ultimately, the museum offers far more than the admiration of sculpture — it is an immersion into the living art of marble, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens and set within one of Naples’ most authentic and vibrant neighborhoods.
