New International Chess Museum in Marostica

On Saturday, May 16, 2026, the International Chess Museum Giovanni Longo – City of Marostica opens its doors at the Castello Inferiore, overlooking the famed Piazza degli Scacchi. It is the first museum of its kind in Italy and among the few in Europe.

The collection includes more than 150 pieces from around the world, donated by Giovanni Longo, a collector and honorary master of the Italian Chess Federation. The municipality of Marostica developed the project, supported by PNRR funds, with a total budget of €668,000.

What to see

The exhibition route, located on the ground floor of the Castello Inferiore, is organized into four thematic rooms representing different continents:

  • Europe: historical boards and pieces;
  • America: varied styles and crafted sets;
  • Africa: artisanal and symbolic objects;
  • Asia: monumental sets and traditional materials.

Displays span from the 18th century to contemporary works and include chess clocks, small artisan creations and collector's curios. The museum also offers video stations on the history of chess and a section dedicated to the 17 world champions.

Visitor information

A free app acting as an audio guide is available to deepen the visitor experience. The museum is designed for chess enthusiasts and general audiences alike, aiming to engage, educate and inspire newcomers to the game.

Practical information, opening hours and bookings can be found on the museum's official website.
