The Ducal Palace rises in Sassuolo, in Piazzale della Rosa, on a site that once hosted a fortress built in 1458 by Borso d’Este. In 1634, Duke Francesco I d’Este ordered the transformation of the fortress into a Baroque residence, entrusting the project to Bartolomeo Avanzini. The building incorporates parts of the ancient castle and is laid out in an irregular quadrilateral around a central courtyard.
The main façade faces Piazzale della Rosa, featuring a central portico with three arches; beneath the lateral arcades stand statues of Galatea and Neptune, sculpted by Antonio Raggi based on a design by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. In the inner courtyard, there is a fountain with Neptune set in a monumental niche.
Inside, the grand staircase leads to the noble floor. The painted decorations and stuccoes were created by a group of artists including Jean Boulanger, Angelo Michele Colonna, Agostino Mitelli, Baldassarre Bianchi, Giovanni Giacomo Monti, and others. The renowned Gallery of Bacchus is a monumental cycle dedicated to the god of wine, with 41 scenes covering the walls and ceiling. The ducal halls and the duchess’s apartments feature allegories, mythological scenes, and virtues in fresco.
The historic park—once very extensive—is now partially restored and open to the public, with the Peschiera (also known as the “Fontanazzo”) serving as a Baroque scenic element.
The palace is also known as Delizia degli Este, a term used for noble courts’ countryside residences.
The statues of Galatea and Neptune at the entrance reflect a connection to Roman Baroque art, thanks to Bernini’s design and Raggi’s execution.
The Gallery of Bacchus cycle is one of the largest dedicated to this theme within a ducal residence in Northern Italy.
In 2004, the palace was officially assigned to the State and included in the Gallerie Estensi network.
In 2025, the southern façade was restored, returning it to its original 18th-century colors, as part of a broader restoration project involving the gardens, the historic water system, and the Peschiera.
