The MUSMI: Guardian of the Memory of the “Catanzaro Brigade”

Autore: Redazione 09/09/2025 20:14

The MUSMI – Historical Military Museum “Catanzaro Brigade” is an important cultural institution located in the heart of the city of Catanzaro. It stands as a guardian of memory, preserving the history and legacy of the renowned Catanzaro Brigade, one of the most decorated and courageous units of the Italian Army during the First World War.

The museum is not limited to displaying artifacts; its purpose is to tell the story of the war and the crucial role played by the Calabrian soldiers, whose courage and sacrifice helped write one of the most significant chapters in Italy’s history.

History and Collections

The Catanzaro Brigade was established in 1915 and became famous for its bravery and resilience on the battlefields, particularly during the bloody Battle of Gorizia. The museum honors its valor through an exhibition that recounts life on the front lines and the heroic deeds of its soldiers.

The MUSMI collection is rich and diverse, organized into several thematic sections:

  • Uniforms and Weapons: the exhibition includes original uniforms worn by the Brigade’s infantrymen, as well as weapons, helmets, and other military equipment that offer a vivid glimpse into trench life.
  • Documents and Photographs: visitors can view valuable historical documents, wartime letters, diaries, and an extensive photo collection depicting the faces and daily moments of the soldiers.
  • Personal Belongings: the collection also features personal items, medals, and decorations, adding a deeply human dimension to the narrative and bringing the stories of the war’s protagonists to life.
  • Models and Reconstructions: scale models and reconstructions help illustrate the evolution of military tactics and battlefield scenarios.

The MUSMI is not only a place of preservation but also a center of civic and historical education, especially aimed at younger generations, to transmit the values of sacrifice, courage, and patriotism.
