The Museo dei Brettii e degli Enotri: a journey into ancient Cosenza

Autore: Redazione 09/09/2025 20:08

Located in the heart of Cosenza’s historic center, within the ancient monumental complex of San Domenico, the Museum of the Brettii and the Enotri is the city’s most important archaeological institution. Dedicated to celebrating the ancient history of the Cosenza area, the museum offers a fascinating exhibition route focused on the peoples who inhabited pre-Roman Calabria: the Brettii and the Enotri.

History and Collections

The museum aims to recount the millennia-old history of the city of Cosenza and its surroundings, highlighting the indigenous cultures that flourished long before the arrival of the Greeks and Romans. Its collections derive from archaeological excavations carried out throughout the province and provide tangible evidence of the daily life, funerary traditions, and economic activities of these ancient civilizations.

The exhibition extends over two floors and hosts artifacts ranging from the Bronze Age to the Roman era, including:

  • Funerary goods: a large section is dedicated to burials, displaying vases, weapons, jewelry, and other items that accompanied the deceased, offering valuable insights into the social hierarchies and religious beliefs of the time.
  • Handcrafted artifacts: ceramic, metal, and stone objects that showcase the craftsmanship of the Brettii and the Enotri.
  • Finds from the Sanctuary of Timpone della Motta (Francavilla Marittima): the museum displays important artifacts from one of Magna Graecia’s oldest sanctuaries, testifying to the early cultural and commercial contacts between local populations and Greek colonists.

The Museum of the Brettii and the Enotri is not only a place of preservation but also a center for research and education, organizing temporary exhibitions, school workshops, and cultural events.
