The Civic Museum of Rieti: a two-souled journey through sabine art and history

Autore: Redazione 27/08/2025 13:46

In the heart of Rieti, historically known as the “umbilicus Italiae” — the geographic center of Italy — stands the Civic Museum of Rieti, the city’s main guardian of historical and artistic heritage. Its uniqueness lies in its dual nature: two distinct yet complementary venues that guide visitors through the centuries, merging the beauty of artistic masterpieces with the tangible legacy of archaeology.

Historical-Artistic Section: Elegance in the Town Hall

Housed inside the historic Town Hall, located in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, the Historical-Artistic Section is a true jewel — a place where Rieti’s past is revealed through art. The beautifully curated rooms hold a rich collection that traces the artistic evolution of the city and the Sabina region from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. Visitors can admire panel and canvas paintings, marble and wooden sculptures, and precious frescoes recovered from local churches and palaces.

The collection is particularly notable for works from the Reatine school and artists from central Italy, with medieval and Renaissance masterpieces that capture the city’s vibrant cultural atmosphere. Among the highlights are religious paintings reflecting the region’s deep spirituality, as well as portraits depicting prominent historical figures. Display cases also feature rare examples of goldsmithing and sacred textiles, offering an intimate look into the craftsmanship and devotion that shaped local identity.

Archaeological Section: In the Footsteps of the Ancient Sabines

The museum’s second “soul” resides in the evocative former Monastery of Santa Lucia, which hosts the Archaeological Section — a journey back to the origins of Rieti and the Sabine people. The collection, built from decades of archaeological excavations across the region, presents artifacts that narrate the story of these ancient communities from their earliest settlements to their integration into the Roman world.

Among the most significant finds are funerary assemblages, offering valuable insights into Sabine rituals, social structures, and spiritual beliefs. Pottery, bronze tools, jewelry, and everyday objects paint a vivid picture of a proud and earthbound people. The section also devotes ample space to the Roman period, documenting the rise of Reate — ancient Rieti — as both a strategic hub and the “navel of Italy.” Inscriptions, statues, and architectural fragments illustrate the city’s transformation under Roman influence, revealing its enduring importance through history.

A Hub for Research, Education, and Culture

The Civic Museum of Rieti is not merely a repository of the past — it is an active center for research and education. Through collaborations with universities and research institutions, it plays a vital role in preserving and promoting the artistic and archaeological heritage of Sabina. With educational programs, school workshops, and themed guided tours, the museum serves as a bridge between history and the next generation, making the past accessible, engaging, and alive.
