In the heart of Ascoli Piceno, among medieval palaces and travertine squares that tell centuries of history, stands a place where the past comes to life: the National Archaeological Museum, housed in the elegant Palazzo Panichi overlooking Piazza Arringo. Here, in bright rooms filled with ancient artifacts, the oldest memory of the Piceno region is preserved—from prehistoric traces to the Roman era.
The Origins of the Museum
The museum was founded in 1865, when the first archaeological discoveries in the Ascoli area began to be collected and cataloged. Initially stored in various city locations, the collections eventually found their permanent home in Palazzo Panichi, creating an exhibition path that tells the long story of the peoples who inhabited this part of the Marche.
The heart of the museum is dedicated to the Picene civilization, which flourished between the 9th and 3rd centuries BCE in the valleys of the Tronto and Aso rivers. The rooms display burial goods, weapons, jewelry, and everyday objects—evidence of a refined and dynamic society in constant contact with Etruscan, Greek, and Adriatic cultures. Roman and medieval artifacts are also present, completing a valuable archaeological journey.
A Museum That Engages with the City
The National Archaeological Museum of Ascoli Piceno is not just a place of preservation, but a vibrant space that interacts with the city. It hosts temporary exhibitions, educational workshops, and initiatives involving schools and families, helping to keep alive the knowledge of Ascoli and Marche’s roots. Walking through its rooms, one feels that history is not just to be observed—but to be heard.
