The Archaeological Museum of Molise: a fascinating journey through distant rras

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 14:24

In the often-overlooked region of Molise, a land rich in history and culture, lies an archaeological heritage of inestimable value — a testament to millennia of human presence and thriving civilizations. At the heart of this legacy stands the Archaeological Museum of Molise, inaugurated in 2020 in Campobasso, which has quickly become an essential reference point for anyone wishing to explore the deep roots of this fascinating territory.

Housed in the former “Mario Pagano” National Boarding School, an impressive historic building in the city center, the museum offers visitors a chronological and thematic journey through the many eras that shaped Molise, from Prehistory to the Early Middle Ages. It is not merely a place of preservation, but of storytelling — where expertly displayed artifacts come to life, narrating the stories of peoples, cultures, and exchanges.

The museum’s exhibition unfolds across multiple levels, encompassing a vast time span and providing a comprehensive overview of the region’s most significant archaeological discoveries.

In the Prehistoric and Protohistoric section, visitors are introduced to the earliest human traces in Molise. Here are displayed stone tools from the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods, true testimonies of prehistoric settlements, hunting instruments, and everyday life. Particularly noteworthy are the findings from the Isernia La Pineta site — one of the oldest Paleolithic deposits in Europe — which provides extraordinary evidence of hunting and butchering activities dating back hundreds of thousands of years.

The Bronze and Iron Ages are also well represented through ceramics, bronzes, and jewelry that illustrate the growth of the first organized communities.

A major section is devoted to the Samnites, the ancient heart of Molise — an Italic people who deeply shaped the region’s history and identity. Through an extensive collection of funerary goods, weapons, ceramics, and cult objects, visitors can explore the life of this proud population, famous for its resilience and its long resistance against Rome. Artifacts from important Samnite centers such as Pietrabbondante, with its grand sanctuary, and Vastogirardi are on display. Particularly interesting are the votive offerings and items linked to Samnite religious rituals.

The section dedicated to the Roman Era and the Romanization of Samnium illustrates the cultural, economic, and social transformations brought by the new rule. Visitors can admire inscriptions, mosaics, sculptures, ceramics, and everyday objects from Roman municipia and villas scattered throughout Molise — including materials from the ancient city of Saepinum (Sepino), whose walls and theater remain well preserved today.

The tour concludes with the Early Middle Ages, a time of great change and cultural transition. Exhibits include artifacts documenting Lombard and Byzantine presence, the formation of castles, and the birth of new settlements. Among the items on display are fibulae, jewelry, ceramics, and weapons, which testify to the cultural blending and evolving social dynamics of the period.

A Museum for Everyone

Beyond its permanent exhibition, the Archaeological Museum of Molise is also an active center for education and outreach. It frequently hosts temporary exhibitions focusing on specific aspects of Molisan archaeology or recent excavation contexts. The layout is modern and inclusive, featuring clear explanatory panels, virtual reconstructions, and multimedia supports that make the visit engaging for all audiences — from children to researchers.
