MUSAM at Vigna di Valle adds historic IMAM Ro.41 biplane to its collection

The Museo Storico dell’Aeronautica Militare (MUSAM) in Vigna di Valle has officially added the IMAM Ro.41 trainer biplane to its permanent collection following a restoration project that spanned thirty years. The aircraft was unveiled during a ceremony held on 16 April 2026 in the Hangar Badoni.

• Unveiling ceremony: institutional speeches, historical reenactments and projections prepared by the CSSAM of Vigna di Valle.
• Historical-scientific forum: panel on “Training yesterday, today and tomorrow” featuring military, academic and conservation experts.
• Restoration: a joint effort by the MUSAM Maintenance and Restoration Section and volunteers from the Gruppo Amici Velivoli Storici (GAVS), combining original parts, contributions from collections and newly fabricated components.
• The aircraft: designed by engineer Giuseppe Galasso for Industrie Aeronautiche Romeo (IAR/IMAM), the Ro.41 was intended as a light fighter but mainly used as a trainer; the prototype flew in 1934 and 743 units were built between 1935 and 1949.

The restoration required specialised technical skills to address missing original drawings, with support from the Politecnico di Napoli, private collections and experienced personnel. The biplane is now on display as part of MUSAM's permanent holdings.
