MANN reopens Numismatics section: over 6,000 coins and 130 jewels

The National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN) reopens its Numismatics section starting on 25 April 2026, unveiling a revised display that traces the economic and social history of the ancient Mediterranean.

  • Collection: more than 6,000 coins, medals, dies and punches dating from the 6th century BC to the Bourbon period and Italian Unification.
  • Jewels: around 130 gold items, many recovered from Pompeii and Herculaneum excavations.
  • Highlights: a gold medallion attributed to the Augustan era and a cameo ring found during Bourbon-era excavations.
  • Archaeological context: painted plaster, epigraphic materials and furnishings that reconstruct production, trade and social status.

The exhibition goes beyond display: it explains minting techniques, ancient weight systems and the role of currency in local economies, offering a coherent picture of the communities that produced and used these objects.

Funding and organization: the reopening was made possible by Ministry of Culture funds under the PON Culture and Development 2014-2020, integrated with ordinary funds for 2024-2025.

Practical tips for visitors:

  • Check opening hours, ticketing and access rules on the MANN official website before your visit.
  • Allow at least one hour to tour the numismatics section in detail.
  • Use labels and panels to connect the exhibits to Vesuvian excavations and local history.
  • Location: National Archaeological Museum of Naples, Piazza Museo 19, 80135 Naples (NA), Italy.
