MANN reopens the Numismatic section: what to see
The National Archaeological Museum of Naples has reopened its Numismatic section, presenting a display that traces the economic and social history of the ancient Mediterranean. The reopening begins on 25 April 2026.
- Collection and chronology: more than 6,000 coins, medals, dies and punches from the 6th century BC through the Bourbon era and the Unification of Italy.
- Jewellery: a selection of about 130 jewels and gold objects, many recovered from Pompeii and Herculaneum excavations.
- Highlights: notable pieces include a gold medallion attributed to the time of Augustus and a cameo ring found during Bourbon-era digs.
- Archaeological context: painted plasters, epigraphic materials and furnishings from houses and workshops that help reconstruct production and trade practices.
The exhibition path goes beyond individual objects to explain minting techniques, weight systems and the monetary role within local economies, offering a contextualised view of the communities that produced and used these items.
Funding and organisation
The reopening was funded by the Ministry of Culture under the PON Cultura e Sviluppo 2014-2020, supplemented with ordinary funds for 2024-2025.
