The Remaining Body: the Etruscan urn at the National Archaeological Museum of Civitavecchia

From 29 May to 29 November 2026 the National Archaeological Museum of Civitavecchia presents the exhibition "The Remaining Body: the prothesis in the Etruscan urn from Civitavecchia and its contemporary resonances." The display highlights a rare Etruscan find recently recovered and conservatively restored, paired with contemporary works that engage with themes of memory and mourning.

What to see

  • Etruscan urn (late 6th century BC) from Cerveteri, depicting the deceased laid on a funerary bed with narrative friezes.
  • Four contemporary works by Massimo Luccioli (section "From Cosmic Ashes") arranged in dialogue with the ancient artifact.
  • Installation on the third floor, set among 19th-century collections and items recovered by law enforcement.

Restoration and cultural value

The urn has been returned to the public collection after investigation and diagnostic restoration that ensured its preservation and public display. The exhibition emphasizes the museum's role in protection, research and cross-period dialogue, enhancing the object’s significance for both the local community and Etruscan studies.
