Colosseum lights up magenta to raise awareness on eosinophilic disorders

On 19 May 2026 the Colosseum in Rome was lit in magenta to support a campaign by Eseo Italia focused on eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders, including eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). The initiative is part of a dedicated awareness month and is timed between two international observances on 18 and 22 May.

Actions and reach

  • Many landmarks across Italy were illuminated to join the initiative;
  • Local informational events took place in several cities;
  • Free consultations were offered at diagnostic centres nationwide;
  • Informational leaflets were distributed in clinics and treatment centres.

The campaign aims to increase visibility for conditions that are often little known, fostering connections among patients, specialists and institutions to shorten diagnostic times and improve quality of life.

Key figures

Estimated prevalence for eosinophilic esophagitis was reported around 142.5 cases per 100,000 people in 2022, with a higher occurrence in males. Other eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders, such as eosinophilic gastroenteritis, are rarer but affect different age groups.

How to get involved

  • Check local event listings and centres offering free consultations in your area;
  • Contact patient associations for educational resources and support groups;
  • Share reliable information to help reduce diagnostic delays and promote early care pathways.

The magenta illumination of the Colosseum draws public attention to the need for timely diagnosis and coordinated support networks for those affected, while highlighting a UNESCO heritage site at the heart of Rome.
