The Viareggio Carnival, which in 2026 reaches its 153rd edition, is described as an event of international importance that fuses art, satire, and popular tradition. The article traces its historical origins, starting from 1873, and its technical evolution, with the introduction of allegorical floats made from moulded papier-mâché perfected in 1925, allowing for the creation of imposing self-propelled structures.
It delves into the artisanal heart of the event, located in the Carnival Citadel (*Cittadella del Carnevale*), where master float builders operate year-round. The creative process, from the presentation of sketches to the manual construction of the floats, is detailed, emphasising how these monumental works address, through allegory, the salient themes of contemporary life.
Structured into six daytime and nighttime Masked Parades (*Corsi Mascherati*) throughout February, and illustrates its popular dimension, which extends to the entire city with district festivals (*feste rionali*) and cultural events. The symbol of the event, the **Burlamacco** mask, created in 1931, and its meaning are presented. Finally, the article invites a visit to the Citadel and its Museum to deepen knowledge of the Carnival's history and provides logistical information for reaching Viareggio, framing the event as a living cultural heritage, capable of renewing itself while keeping centuries-old artisanal techniques and a strong community identity intact.
