In 2026 the Palazzi dei Rolli and the Strade Nuove of Genoa were awarded the UNESCO Site of the Year title. The recognition highlights the site's combination of historical importance, public accessibility and cultural programmes that turn the historic centre into an open-air museum.
Originating between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, the system developed when Genoa was a major commercial power. Grand residences were built along newly planned monumental streets; the "rolli" were official lists indicating which palaces would host visiting dignitaries. Today these historic buildings illustrate Renaissance and Baroque urban design and architecture.
Key sites include Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Doria Tursi, which house significant European painting collections. Alongside public museums, private palaces preserve original layouts with atriums, loggias and hanging gardens.
Periodic initiatives such as the Rolli Days open many palaces that are otherwise private, offering guided tours led by art historians, students and volunteers. These programmes are central to the site's recent international recognition.
The 2026 award underlines the Palazzi dei Rolli's status as a leading Italian monumental heritage. The site demonstrates how historic architecture, scholarly research and public engagement can combine to sustain a living cultural project that attracts visitors, scholars and enthusiasts from around the world.
