The Bronzes of San Casciano to be Housed in the Palazzo dell’Arcipretura

By 2026 the core collection of the Bronzes of San Casciano dei Bagni will return permanently to their place of origin and will be displayed in a new museum located in the Palazzo dell’Arcipretura. The project includes a research hub set up in collaboration with the University for Foreigners of Siena.

• Funding: €4.5 million from the Ministry of Culture’s Major Cultural Projects fund.
• Works start: expected by 2026.
• Purpose: permanent exhibition and archaeological research centre.
• Origins of finds: many items come from the Bagno Grande excavations and other local archaeological campaigns.

The Municipality of San Casciano dei Bagni has supported the initiative over the years, managing excavation concessions and hosting excavation teams and students. These campaigns produced the artifacts that will form the museum’s core collection.

Practical notes for visitors and cultural operators:

• Existing display areas (the town hall entrance and the Stanze Cassianensi) will remain open and continue to exhibit items.
• The Palazzo dell’Arcipretura will be dedicated to museum use due to the volume of material to display.
• Staffing details have not been finalised; management will be entrusted to qualified museum and archaeology professionals.

The initiative aims to strengthen the village’s cultural offer and attract visitors year-round, while providing residents improved access to local archaeological heritage. Information on the opening date, opening hours and educational programmes will be announced after restoration and installation are completed.
