Hokusai at Palazzo Bonaparte: overview

From 27 March to 29 June 2026 Palazzo Bonaparte presents an extensive retrospective devoted to Katsushika Hokusai, a leading figure of Ukiyo-e. The show gathers roughly 200 works covering the artist's key subjects: landscapes, scenes of Edo-period life and studies focused on water.

What to see

The exhibition is arranged thematically to highlight recurring motifs in Hokusai's work:

  • The Great Wave off Kanagawa and other iconic prints demonstrating the power of the sea and Hokusai's formal precision.
  • The Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, portraying the mountain at different times of day, seasons and weather conditions.
  • A Tour of the Waterfalls of Various Provinces, where water appears in many forms and textures.
  • The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, illustrating everyday life and the traffic along the historic route linking Edo to Kyoto.
