Herdonia (also recorded as Erdonia) is an archaeological site on a hill southwest of Ordona, in the province of Foggia. Excavations in recent decades have uncovered important portions of the Roman town, while much of the settlement remains buried and potentially rich in archaeological information.
Fieldwork begun in 1962 by archaeologist Joseph Mertens revealed key elements of the urban plan. Major finds include:
These elements portray Herdonia as a settled centre equipped with the typical public, religious and economic infrastructures of a mid-level Roman town. Researchers estimate that only about 20% of the original settlement has been excavated to date.
After roughly thirty years of continuous excavation, work halted around 2000 due to disputes over land ownership. More recently, protective steps were taken: part of the site was acquired by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage in 2014, and the acquisition was completed in May 2022. Full control of the area enables systematic stratigraphic research, conservation measures and projects for public use.
Objects recovered during excavations are kept and partly displayed in the local archaeological museum. A renewed excavation and enhancement programme could significantly expand the museum collection and support sustainable cultural tourism and education initiatives.
Why it matters: Herdonia is a significant piece of the Romanization puzzle in southern Italy, offering insights into urban planning, economy and religious life. The recent administrative developments and the prospect of new excavations offer a real chance to deepen knowledge and improve public access for both scholars and visitors.
