Giovanni Agostino da Lodi: first solo exhibition in Milan

From 26 May to 13 September 2026 the Pinacoteca di Brera presents the first comprehensive exhibition dedicated to Giovanni Agostino da Lodi, an original and somewhat enigmatic figure of the early 16th century.

Curated by Maria Cristina Passoni and Cristina Quattrini, the show traces the artist’s stylistic development through comparisons with major contemporaries and loans from Italian and international collections.

Highlights and themes

The exhibition reconstructs Giovanni Agostino’s artistic trajectory, emphasizing key relationships and influences:

  • Dialogues with Bramantino and the Milanese school;
  • Connections to Venetian painting: Alvise Vivarini, Giovanni Bellini, Giorgione and Boccaccio Boccaccino;
  • Impact of Northern European art, notably Albrecht Dürer, especially after Dürer’s second Venetian stay (1505–1507).

Works on display include documented pieces such as the altarpiece for the barcaioli guild (dated after 25 March 1492) and key paintings from the Pinacoteca di Brera, illustrating a transition from refined detail to a more monumental approach linked to Leonardesque and Bramantino tendencies.
