FAI Spring Days: guided visits to monuments in Trieste and Friuli Venezia Giulia

The FAI Spring Days are an annual initiative to promote and protect Italy's monumental and landscape heritage. Organized by the Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano (FAI), the event opens normally closed historic sites to the public, with volunteers and student guides presenting the history, art and architecture of each place.

For the 2026 edition, openings are scheduled across hundreds of Italian towns; many sites accept a free-will contribution to support FAI activities. The initiative is ideal for visitors interested in historic palaces, churches, gardens and other monumental sites.

Highlights in Trieste

  • Prefecture Palace (Palazzo della Prefettura) – Representative halls normally closed for institutional use are occasionally opened to visitors, with guided tours organized by the Trieste Delegation and the Young Group.
  • Palazzo Vivante – Early 20th-century rooms can be visited with tours conducted by the Apprendisti Ciceroni students, revealing furnishings, frescoes and architectural details.
  • Greek Orthodox Church of San Nicolò – Guided visits often led by members of the local community, presenting the religious and artistic heritage of the church.

Practical tips for visitors

  • Check the official program: times and access rules are published on the FAI website; confirm schedules and possible mandatory bookings.
  • Arrive early: popular openings may have queues; arriving in advance increases the chance to join scheduled guided tours.
  • Free-will contribution: bring cash or use the payment methods indicated to support FAI conservation projects.
  • Accessibility: check in advance for any architectural barriers or visitor limitations.

FAI Spring Days are a concrete opportunity to discover and protect local monuments. For the complete list of openings and updates in the region, consult the official FAI website.
