On 21 and 22 March 2026 the nationwide initiative for cultural heritage opens more than 780 sites across about 400 towns. Now in its 34th edition, the event allows visitors to access palaces, monuments and historic sites that are often closed to the public.
The event is organised by the Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano (FAI) and led by thousands of volunteers together with the Apprendisti Ciceroni, secondary school students trained as guides. This edition includes openings connected to the 800th anniversary of St Francis of Assisi.
Participating properties range from abbeys and historic villas to gardens and coastal areas managed by the FAI. In major cities, institutional palaces, historic halls and symbolic landmarks join the programme: examples include historic government buildings and courts in Rome, public palaces and contemporary towers in Milan, the city hall historic rooms in Turin, sporting venues and noble palaces in Naples, and the famous lighthouse in Genoa.
Why attend: the Spring Days are a chance to explore local history, learn about conservation and restoration projects, and support cultural heritage through donations and membership. The FAI currently manages multiple properties and allocates significant funds for restoration and routine maintenance.
Practical tips: check the local FAI programme for schedules and access rules, book in advance if required, bring ID and follow guides' instructions. Some sites may have limited accessibility.
