World Biodiversity Day: FAI in the Marche with guided walks and outdoor activities

On the occasion of World Biodiversity Day, FAI is running a program in the Marche dedicated to nature, agro-biodiversity and spontaneous species. The initiatives promote slow enjoyment of the territory and practical approaches to landscape stewardship.

When and where

Main period: activities concentrated between Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 May 2026. Additional related events take place on other dates, including 22 and 31 May across the region.

Main event in Recanati (Orto sul Colle dell'Infinito)

  • 10:00 – Walk in Biodiversity: a 1h30 walk with botanist Fabio Taffetani to learn about wild plants, their adaptations and conservation value in urban and agricultural landscapes. The route ends with a small tasting based on wild herbs. Note: not suitable for people with reduced mobility or strollers.
  • 15:30 – The gardener tells: a 1-hour visit with the garden’s gardener and Laura Gioacchini of “Cose dell'altro Orto” on local varieties, traditional practices and ways to reduce food waste by reusing often-discarded parts.
  • 17:00 – Underfoot, a treasure: a 1-hour talk with Francesco Broccolo on wild herbs, their historical uses and role in rural culture.

Other appointments in the Marche

  • 22 May (Ancona) – “Nature Reborn” meeting at the Archaeological Museum of the Marche, focused on habitats and pollinators.
  • 23 May – “Heart of Biodiversity” walk in the Castagnola Wood (Montemarciano); visits to San Benedetto del Tronto (Sentina Nature Reserve and Fattoria Ferri) and the “Ancient Fruits and Biodiversity” route in Macerata (SiGi Farm).
  • 24 May – Activities in Ancona (Cardeto Park), trekking in Genga (Monte Predicatore pinewood) and events in Sefro (Montelago) on the Montelago plains.
  • 31 May – Montegiorgio: “The Palio Walk” on the Viarum path, with stops such as the avenue of Cypress Calvi and the Sasso Waterfall.

How to take part

Activities are led by biologists, botanists, ornithologists, beekeepers, park rangers and nature guides. Many visits have limited places: check details and book through local FAI delegations or the individual sites. The meetings aim to spread sustainable practices and foster mindful use of the landscape.

Practical tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes and suitable outdoor clothing.
  • Bring water, sun protection and a hat for outdoor activities.
  • Respect natural sites: do not pick protected plants and follow guide instructions.
  • Check participation limits and reserve your place in advance.

Location: Orto sul Colle dell'Infinito, Via Monte Tabor 2, 62019 Recanati (MC) and various sites across the Marche. For information and reservations contact local FAI delegations.
