Gibellina Italian Capital of Contemporary Art 2026: €700,000 for schools

The Sicilian Region, through the Department of Education and Vocational Training, has launched the second edition of the initiative “Gibellina Italian Capital of Contemporary Art 2026”, aimed at schools of all levels across the island. The programme seeks to promote knowledge of contemporary art and the cultural heritage of Gibellina, a symbol of rebirth after the 1968 earthquake.

Following the success of the first edition, which funded 163 projects, the new edition provides resources to support educational activities, visits to Gibellina and the creation of original artistic works.

  • Total funding: €700,000
  • Maximum grant per participating school: €7,500
  • Beneficiaries: schools of all levels in Sicily; priority given to institutions that did not participate previously
  • Project formats: educational activities, site visits, collaborations with museums, artists and cultural associations
  • Application deadline: 31 May 2026

The regional education assessor emphasized art’s educational value as a tool to develop creativity and critical thinking: the initiative aims to make students active participants in culture. Applications must follow the procedures set out in the circular published on the Sicilian Region’s website.
