The Gypsum and Sulfur initiative, focused on promoting the natural and mining heritage of the Agrigento area, ends with a guided hike at Punta Bianca. The event offers a walk to discover sites related to historic gypsum and sulfur extraction and the natural features of the coastline.
The day is organized by WWF - Torre Salsa Nature Reserve with the patronage of the Free Municipal Consortium of Agrigento, the Sicilian Regional System of Protected Natural Areas, and the Regional Association of Geologists of Sicily.
The route crosses coastal stretches and areas of speleological and mining interest, providing insights into extraction history and local biodiversity. Participants should wear hiking shoes, bring water, sun protection and clothing suitable for coastal wind and conditions.
Attending is a great opportunity to learn more about a future protected area and to appreciate the importance of conserving sites connected to Sicily’s historical mining activities.
