Theft at the Magnani Rocca Foundation: overview

The Magnani Rocca Foundation's Villa dei Capolavori in Mamiano di Traversetolo (Parma) was targeted in a night-time burglary during which three high-value works from the permanent collection were taken.

The stolen works and setting

The missing pieces include artworks by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse. They were displayed in the French room on the villa's first floor and formed part of the historic collection assembled by Luigi Magnani.

How the theft unfolded

Reconstruction indicates the perpetrators forced an entrance and carried out a swift, organised operation lasting only a few minutes. Surveillance footage reportedly shows individuals with covered faces, suggesting a professional group.

Investigations and security response

  • Law enforcement agencies, including units specialising in cultural heritage protection, are conducting coordinated investigations.
  • The Foundation has acknowledged the prompt actions of internal security, local Carabinieri and a private security firm, which prevented further illicit activity.
  • The incident was initially handled discreetly to avoid jeopardising investigative work; the museum has remained open to visitors.

Significance

The theft affects one of Italy’s notable private collections, recognised for its European masterpieces and for hosting important exhibitions. The villa was hosting a major exhibition on Symbolism in Italy, underlining the Foundation’s cultural role.

What the public can do

  • Anyone with information should contact the relevant authorities; do not approach suspects directly.
  • Museums, galleries and collectors have been alerted to monitor for any appearance of the stolen works on national or international markets.

For updates and official statements, follow announcements from the Foundation and law enforcement agencies.
