History and description
Built in the first half of the 16th century by order of Cosimo I de’ Medici, the fortress suffered some damage due to mines but was later rebuilt and restored around the mid-19th century. Subsequent recovery works led to the discovery of many previously unknown rooms. Designed with a pentagonal plan, it is characterized by bastions and a moat, while inside visitors can admire rooms, galleries, and ramparts offering breathtaking views over the entire city of Arezzo.
Curiosities
In recent times, a legend spread about the existence of a secret tunnel. However, this was disproven when the cavity was found to be short and blind, containing only a humorous note left as a prank.
Access
Accessible by reservation, especially for events and temporary exhibitions, the fortress can be visited at the cost of €14, with free entry and specific reductions available.
How to reach it
Located on Colle di San Donato, the site can be reached by train to Arezzo railway station followed by a walk, by bus along the so-called Cammino di Francesco, or by car with parking available nearby.
A true testament to the power of the Medici family, the Medici Fortress of Arezzo is a perfect blend of architecture, history, and nature—an unmissable destination for those wishing to uncover the secrets of Tuscany’s most influential dynasty.
