History and description
Dating back to 963 AD, when Emperor Otto I granted the castrum Sarzanae to the Bishop of Luni, the fortress later became the residence of Castruccio Castracani, who began its modifications. These were continued by Tomaso Fregoso and later by Lorenzo de’ Medici, who ordered its transformation into the current Renaissance fortress. The structure features a diamond‑shaped plan with two triangular bastions, a four‑story keep, and numerous rooms and defensive passages. During the War of Austrian Succession, the surrounding village was expropriated, but the fortress itself was never involved in destructive battles. Preserved intact to this day, it is now managed by the Italian Ministry of Culture.
Curiosities
A model for later medieval fortifications, the fortress today hosts numerous cultural events and, at certain times, even La Locanda della Fortezza, a restaurant located within its walls.
