History and description
With origins dating back to Magna Graecia, the castle was built in the 13th century starting from an earlier fortification and a cylindrical tower. It was later modified under the Aragonese rule in 1469 and by Andrea Carafa, who added square bastions while maintaining its defensive role against maritime attacks. The complex, with a regular layout on a small island in the sea, also included a fortified village with shops and a chapel.
Curiosities
In addition to being celebrated by the Italian postal service with a stamp in 1980, the castle was also used as a film set for Pier Paolo Pasolini’s The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964).
