History and description
Built in the first three decades of the 16th century by order of Pope Clement VII and designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, from whom it takes its second name, the fortress was originally intended to protect Ancona from enemy assaults. From 1532, however, it became part of the Papal domain, marking the end of the Republic of Ancona. Over the following centuries, it maintained its military function until it was abandoned toward the end of the 20th century, later restored by the Marche Region. With a layout of five bastions and a central keep, the restoration works also uncovered weapons and storerooms inside, further confirming its military role.
Curiosities
Some of its areas have been converted into a public park, equipped with a bar, children’s playgrounds, and fitness areas, now known as Parco della Cittadella.
Access
The fortress itself is accessible only during events and special occasions, by reservation, with costs varying depending on the event. By contrast, the Parco della Cittadella is open daily and free of charge.
How to reach it
Located on the top of Colle Astagno, the monument can be reached by car, using the nearby parking areas, but it is advisable to arrive on foot after taking the train to the central station.
A key site documenting the Papal dominion over the city of Ancona, the Fortress of the Citadel is the perfect destination for history lovers and for those who wish to enjoy some relaxation in the nearby park.
