Forte la Carnale – from defensive structure to urban park

Autore: Redazione 02/10/2025 07:25

History and description

Built in 1563 by Andrea di Gaeta, Forte la Carnale was part of a defensive system designed to protect the city from Saracen raids and threats coming from the sea. Its name is thought to derive from a battle between knights and Saracens in 872 AD, but it is also known as the “powder magazine” since, in the 19th century, it was used by the Bourbons as a military ammunition depot. Structurally, the fortress has a square plan with battlements, and its upper part once served as quarters for mounted men who would ride out to warn the population in case of attacks. It became a Bourbon fortress in 1828 and later a bunker during World War II. In the 1980s, the building was restored and repurposed to host cultural exhibitions and municipal activities, typical of a tourist complex overlooking the seafront.

Curiosities

Among the battles in which it played a role was the defense of Salerno led by Ippolito di Pastina, known as the “Masaniello of Salerno.” In the 17th century, he rebelled against the Spanish and established the command of his revolt inside the fortress for nearly a year.

Access

La Carnale is freely accessible at any time of day.

How to reach it

Located in the Pastena district, La Carnale can be easily reached by car via the Salerno ring road towards Pastena, or by public transport using city bus lines 2 or 6. It is also connected to the city center by the seafront cycle path, which can be traveled on foot or by bicycle.

La Carnale is a place where history, nature, and daily life blend together, offering visitors an alternative perspective on the city of Salerno.
