History and description
Built between 1278 and 1280, designed by Fra’ Bevignate da Cingoli and Boninsegna da Venezia to celebrate the arrival of water in the city, the fountain is composed of two concentric polygonal basins. The first depicts the months of the year with zodiac signs or biblical episodes, while the second shows sacred figures or local legends, all sculpted in marble and bronze. At the top stand three female figures, symbolically representing the theological virtues, supporting a bronze basin.
Curiosities
Considered a prestigious work of the emerging merchant class, the fountain’s construction was marked by the active participation of the citizens, who contributed both financially and with craftsmanship. Interestingly, they were reimbursed only in 1286.
Access
Located in Piazza IV Novembre, the fountain is always freely accessible.
How to reach it
As it is situated in the historic center of Perugia, the best way to reach the fountain is on foot, though cars and public transport can be used to get close to the city center.
A splendid medieval creation, the Fontana Maggiore is one of Perugia’s most famous monuments, perfectly integrated into its historic center and best enjoyed while strolling through the city’s architectural treasures.
